Church of Hallgrímur

Rising above all the buildings in Reykjavik, is the Church of Hallgrímur which offers a historical look at the country’s rich culture and past. With around 73 meters, the church’s steeple is impossible to miss, thus making the said building as one of the most recognizable attractions in the city.
Named after the well-known Icelandic clergyman and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson, The Church of Hallgrímur presents authentic Icelandic interior designs, with an architectural structure that resembles basaltic lava, and has a main area that can contain more than 1000 people at a time. One of the church’s most famous artworks which is found in front of the building is the statue of Leifur Eiríksson, a Viking explorer who is said to have discovered America. Other famous sites in the church include its large pipe organ built by German organ builder Johannes Klais. Guests can also take a lift up to the Church’s viewing deck in its tower and observe Reykjavik and the mountains that surround it. As a final note, the nave, or the central area of the church, is open to the public daily.
