Grímsey

The Grimsey Island is quite small, with a land area of only 5.3 sq. km., but offers large natural resources and is also a land of legends. It is the northernmost island off the coast of Iceland and is situated around 41 Kms from the mainland. This island is made up mainly from Basalt with the only exception of sandstone which is also found in some part of the island. The total population on the island is little over to 150 with the residents' chiefly dependent on fishing and fish processing with little support from agricultural activities and collection of seabird eggs.
When in Grimsey, you will learn many legends about it. One of the legends is that the Arctic Circle travels through the middle of the bed of Grimsey's priest.
The other one is about the formation of the island. It states that the island was formed, when one of the giants, who were trying to separate the Westfiord area from the mainland, wedged his shovel down and dug out a piece of the coastline, which passed over into the bay. Thus the island was formed. This legend is well supported by the cove left behind fits with the northern shoreline of the island. Grimsey can be accessed from the mainland by a ferry and with the small airport on the island.
