The Arbær Open-air Museum showcases one of the most interesting sites which Reykjavik has to offer. Named after a nearby old turf farm known as Árbær, this museum attempts to capture as accurately as possible the country’s history and major past events. Even the museum’s staffs are dressed in clothing which depicts those of the people in each significant time period. The open-air museum is consists of various types of Icelandic houses including a small old-fashioned general store, all of which reflect the way of living of residents in early 20th century Reykjavik. Within each house, guests can view the various relics and antique objects utilized by Reykjavik citizens in the past. Between each house, guests can find lawns where they can play games, lounge, and bask in the sunshine. In the center’s area for ancient machines, visitors can view Iceland’s first steam locomotive roller, known as Briet. Lummur, Iceland’s traditional pancakes are served in designated shops in the open-air museum. The place is open mainly during the summer, although field trips and educational tours can be scheduled any time of the year. |
