Thingvellir

Thingvellir, located near the Reykjanes Peninsula and the volcanic area of Hengill, a national park which many Icelanders consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the country. Being designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this cultural park has gained recognition from other nations as well.
Being a part of Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, Thingvellir amazes its guests with its geological structure which resulted from volcanic and tectonic activities. Here, one will find natural wonders such as canyons, rifts, rivers, and waterfalls. A popular rift in this place is Nikulásargjá, where the water is exceptionally clear. This area is called penny canyon as it has many coins at its bottom, which were thrown by people in the hopes of having their wish granted. Apart from the said fancy activity, guests can also hike along the paths of the park, take images of the wildlife in the scenic surroundings, or simply stay at one spot and admire the dashing serene beauty of the said attraction.
Moving on, in addition to being a picturesque area, it is also a place of rich history. It is within this park where the Alţingi, one of the world’s oldest parliamentary institutions, was established. For Centuries, laws were made and disputes were settled by lawmakers in this park. Furthermore, the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Iceland was also made here. Lastly, this park is also the summer home of political leaders such as Iceland’s Prime Minister.
